Essential Laws For Those Listening To The Sounding Of The Shofar (based on the Mishna Brura)

  • One should have intent to fulfill the obligation during the preceding Brachot and during the sounding of the Shofar.
  • One should listen carefully to each word of the Brachot and to every sound emitted from the Shofar.
  • It is customary to stand during the sounding of the Shofar. Even leaning on the chair is considered as if one is sitting.
  • One should remain silent until the sounding of the Shofar is fully concluded.
  • One should not pause in the middle of the sounding of the Shofar in order to Daven and therefore the “Yehi Ratzon” should not be recited until the completion of the sounding of the Shofar. In communities where it is customary to recite the “Yehi Ratzon” in the middle of the sounding of the Shofar, one should not stop them from doing so.
